Watling Hope complete installation of 2km wastewater pumping station at Alma Inn, Southampton

SOUTHAMPTON, UK

Wastewater pumping and treatment experts Watling Hope have completed the installation of a sewage pumping station at the Alma Inn for Mitchells & Butlers plc.

The Alma Inn is a popular pub carvery on the outskirts of Southampton.

Wastewater for the site was running to an onsite sewage treatment plant but owing to the pubs success the existing system was becoming overloaded.

Watling Hope raised concerns to the pub’s owners who, keen to ensure environmental compliance, instructed them to investigate options for upgrading the system.

A feasibility study was conducted identifying the available options of upgrading the existing sewage treatment plant or pumping waste to the main sewer some 2 km away. The report was submitted to the client.

Upon consideration of the options Mitchells & Butlers plc instructed Watling Hope to proceed with installation of a pumped connection to the mains sewer.

This was to create a bypass of the existing on-site sewage treatment plant and pump all wastewater off-site to the main sewer system.

The works would  involve installation of a permanent pumped-connection to the main sewer system via a small bore pump main running for over 2 kilometres.

An important consideration was that the site would continue to trade throughout the works.

Watling Hope’s specialist installation team carried out the works over the course of 5 weeks, which involved traffic management and connection to the main sewer system.

Much of the pipe-line was installed using directional drilling equipment thereby minimising impact on road users and wildlife.

The new pumping station was commissioned in April and Watling Hope de-commissioned the old sewage treatment plant.

A senior spokesperson for Mitchells & Butlers PLC commented:

"Watling Hope managed this potentially complicated project with experience and expertise, ensuring full communication was given to all parties.  As the client we were kept regularly and proactively updated on the progress of the works and were able to leave Watling Hope to manage the end to end project without intervention.  The project was exceptionally well managed and delivered to time and budget, given the scale, complexity and site specific issues this is a real testament to the expertise provided and trading to this very busy business was not interrupted."
