Sewage Treatment Plants
Protecting the Environment, Ensuring System Compliance
Sewage treatment plants are typically located out of sight and as a consequence are often neglected. However the penalties for neglecting a plant can be both dangerous and costly.
Sewage Treatment systems are organic environments which need continuous operation to sustain biological activity. Should the air-flow through a plant fail (or in the case of an RBC the contactor stop rotating) then the biological colony will not receive oxygen and will die.
It is therefore essential that the components which provide air through the system are properly maintained and checked. This may include a variety of components such as pumps, compressors and motors and gearboxes.
Problems arising from poor maintenance include
- Environmental Pollution
If a plant is allowed to deteriorate and it's the biological process fails it could result in raw sewage passing through into a watercourse and have a severe impact on the local environment.
- Prosecution from the Environment Agency
In order to ensure that sewage plants discharge the appropriate quality of effluent the Environment Agency carry out regular testing. If a sewage treatment plant fails the consent given the Environment Agency can issue a fine of up to £20,000 and initiate a criminal prosecution of the site owners - which in a public company pass to board level.
- Health & Safety Dangers
Sewage treatment systems are dangerous places, and on sites open to the public such as pubs, hotels, golf courses and caravan parks the need to secure the area is paramount. In many cases a neglected sewage treatment plant will have unsecured lids and chambers, if these are easy to open they may pose a risk of injury to the public - in particular children.
