Bulls Head, Earlswood

Project: Bull’s Head, Earlswood
Client: Daniel Thwaites
Works: Installation of pumping station and 700m rising main under public highway

PROBLEM
A planned development for the Bull’s Head pub in Earlswood aimed at increasing trade meant that existing sewage and waste water equipment would be insufficient to handle the resulting increase in effluent.
The pub is located in a scenic area next to a canal system. The Environmental Agency would not allow any discharge from the site into the canal system including high quality effluent processed by a proposed sewage treatment plant.
In addition, the local council would not allow private pumping to the mains system via the public highway.
As a consequence, the site was operating with a self-contained cess pool which was receiving all discharged effluent.
Annual costs of £12,000 were being incurred to remove waste from the site which was stifling profits and preventing the expansion plans from going ahead.
Daniel Thwaites approached Watling Hope for a solution.
SOLUTION
Watling Hope evaluated the existing arrangements and identified the only possible solution – to dig under the highway laying a private pumped connection to the nearest sewer point.
In order to appease the local council Watling Hope lobbied on behalf of Daniel Thwaites and obtained permission to install a private pumping main under the Highway using directional drilling techniques.
Works began and a rising main was installed underneath the public highway from the pub to the nearest mains sewer some 500mm away. A grp package pump station was then installed next to the cess pit to receive all effluent from the pub and automatically pump it to the mains sewer.
RESULTS
- Fully automatic float operated duty/standby pump station
- Installation of 700m 2" diameter rising-main pumping all waste to the local public sewer
- Installation of a Grease Guzzler® dosing system to prevent grease build-up within the pump chamber
- Site no longer restricted by limits of the sewage system, all wastewater is pumped automatically to the local mains sewer
- Refurbishment of pub complete, premises trading at record levels
- Tankering costs of £12,000 per annum eliminated
- Owners of site are now able to double the previous levels of trade
