Chamberlains Meadow, Reading

Project: Chamberlains Meadow, Reading
Client: Thames Valley Housing Charitable Trust
Works: Installation of new Sewage Treatment Plant
_______________________________________________________
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Chamberlains Meadow is a site consisting of 18 x 3-bedroom homes constructed in 1991 owned and operated by Thames Valley Housing Charitable Trust.
With no public sewer in the vicinity a package sewage treatment plant had been installed with discharge to surface water drains. The plant was located adjacent to the residents’ car park and less than 20m from the nearest dwelling. The plant has consistently failed to meet the requirements of the Environment Agency.
A new plant was required which would:
- be in the same location as the existing plant
- be guaranteed to meet the Environment Agency consent conditions
- be to the standards for adoption by Thames Water
- not encroach on the existing car park
- not create any odour or nuisance
SOLUTION
Watling Hope carried-out detailed assessments to provide a suitable solution. Following assessment Watling Hope proposed to install a new WPL HiPAF (high performance aerated filter) with specification to Thames Water standards. Works were undertaken by Watling Hope in March 2010. The plant was fitted with external desludge-pipework for safe and easy emptying by vacuum tanker. In addition to installation of the new sewage plant Watling Hope also erected fencing around the plant, carried out all ground-works and paved the surrounding area. The works took 4 weeks to complete, and were on time and on budget.
RESULTS
- System installed to Thames Water Adoptable Standards
- No downtime for residents during installation
- System discharge effluent tested and meets Environmental Permit Standards
- Odours and nuisance eliminated
- Works completed on-time and within budget
- Watling Hope erected fencing and laid paving as part of contract
