PROBLEM
Fuller Smith & Turner PLC were investing nearly £1.8 million to refurbish their premises formerly known as The Hogs Lodge. The plan was to build a new 20 bedroom hotel and to modernise and upgrade the existing restaurant and kitchen facilities. The existing foul waste system needed to be upgraded to cater for the increased number of people who would be using the new hotel and restaurant.

To handle the increase in effluent from the planned increase in trade the Company’s initial thoughts were to install an on-site sewage treatment plant - they approached Watling Hope for design and installation.

SOLUTION
Watling Hope carried out detailed assessments to provide a suitable solution. The most cost-effective solution would be to connect the site to the public sewers.

Watling Hope proposed and subsequently installed a new sewage pumping station including a 24-hr emergency storage capacity in the event of a power cut. Flygt’s new generation ‘Solids Handling N-pumps’ were selected   to provide the efficient dispersal of waste.  The pumps were installed in their new GRP “TOP” pumping station (bespoke design to include 24-hr storage in the same tank).  The TOP sump means that under normal operating conditions the wet well is self-cleansing which saves money on tankering out in the future.

In addition to the pumping station, Watling Hope laid approximately 2000m of 90mm o/d Black MDPE Rising Main to provide a pumped connection to the public sewers in Clanfield. Due to the distance, the pipe was laid using ‘directional drilling’ rather than the ‘open trench’ method.

In order to protect the pumping station and pumping-main Fuller Smith & Turner PLC also installed two of Watling Hope’s Grease Shields in the kitchen.

RESULTS

  • Duty / Standby sewage pumping station installed in grounds of property
  • Permanent pumped connection to mains sewer installed, pumping a distance of 700m
  • Minimal space used at the site for the system
  • All complex land ownership issues handled by Watling Hope
  • System protected from grease contamination using Grease Shield® grease removal system
  • Works completed on time and to budget
