Project: Long Ashes Park, Yorkshire Dales
Client: Lakeland Leisure
Works: Upgrade to existing Sewage Treatment Plant

PROBLEM
Long Ashes Park had an old bespoke submerged aeration filter sewage treatment plant that was not coping properly with the sewage outflow from the site.  The Managing Director was very concerned and was eager to find a long term environmental solution to the problem that would reduce the escalating tankering costs.

SOLUTION
This delicate site needed to be kept operational during the installation of a new plant.  The new solution also needed to take into account that bedrock was fairly close to the surface that could make installation more challenging. Watling Hope reviewed the situation and recommended that rather than wholly replacing the existing system that it should be modified.  The modification in essence changed this plant from a submerged aeration filter (SAF) process into an SBR (Sequential Batch Reactor) plant.

The 60 cubic metre primary settlement tanks were retained and the brick-built SAF aeration tank was converted into the aeration and settlement tank for the SBR process. This was then equipped with sludge return pumps (to pump excess sludges back to the primary settlement tanks) and clean water pumps to pump the clear treated water out of the treatment area.

A 30 cubic metre Buffer Tank was installed complete with Duty/Standby pumps to feed raw sewage into the treatment tank. As the former plant discharged to a soak away, Watling Hope installed 2 no 25 cubic metre clean water tanks fitted with a hydro-brake to slowly release the batch of treated effluent to the soak away so that a ‘batch’ of 50 cubic metre did not flood and overwhelm the soak away.

Later the discharge was modified to discharge through a reed bed in order to comply with their Environment Agency Consent to Discharge/Environmental Permit.

DURATION OF PROJECT
4 weeks

RESULTS

  • Discharge meets Environmental Permit Standards
  • Site no longer restricted by limits of sewage system
  • Odours and nuisance eliminated
  • Tankering costs significantly reduced
